August 29, 2010 – Week 2 of Series || Are you taking steps to know and be known? We all have a desire to be known by others, having people in our lives who come alongside us, talk with us, and shape us. We need to live that way because God created us to be connected in community.

Read Luke 19:1-10

1. Talk about a time you felt included by a group. Why does that feel so much better than when you were excluded?
2. What Risks did Zacchaeus take in approaching Jesus about being included in the Group?
3. What risks did Jesus take in reaching out to Zacchaeus? What do you notice about the invitation? Why was Jesus willing to do it?
4. What were the results in Zacchaeus’s life? How does being part of  community provide salve for a hurting soul?
5. Who do you know that you could invite to be apart of this community experience? Pray as group for courage and opportunity to do it, and then commit to asking them this week!

Week 1 of Series – When was the last time you stopped and considered the value of Biblical Community that transforms you? When was the last time you stopped and considered your role in God’s transforming work in the life of another? In Hebrews 10 we are challenged to live in community, a community that will be an agent of transformation into dedicated disciples of Jesus!

Week 1 – To love as Jesus calls us to love requires that we grow up.  Growing up involves more than making the choice to exercise spiritual muscles, but doing so in the context of community.

Texts: John 13:34-35; Hebrews 10:24-25

1. If you had a friend describe you to another, what do you think they would say concerning your walk of faith?
2. What obstacles prevent you from maturing in the faith? Have these obstacles changed with time?
3. How could the group BEST support you growing up? (Examples: accountability, ministry involvement, teaching)

5 Weeks In August/September
This fall, we will delve into a sermon series that will help us understand the value and importance of Community. Community is soo much more than merely sharing snacks and watching a video curriculum together. It is more than the surface level connections you have at the gym, the office, or the sports field. And true community is more than attending a few Sunday school class or Bible studies (i.e. those that purely teach and don’t build relationships, etc.). Community is not a social club.

Deeper & More Purposeful
We believe that together we can develop a deeper spiritual & more outward focused faith if we arrive at a mutual understanding and purposeful moving toward the practice of true community. What topics will we cover in this series? We’ll define Community, which for the Christ follower, can be defined as a consistent deep relationship between people for the purpose of maturity in faith in Jesus. We’ll also study how Community provides connection in a family of faith, equipping and preparing for your ministry and serves as an encouragement of heart and soul. And we will also lay the groundwork for understanding how in Community we can foster greater worship and more mission.

August 22 – September 19

Aug 15, 2010 – “Let not your hearts be troubled,” commands Jesus to his disciples. Have you ever thought of this as a commandment of Jesus? Regardless, this commandment is one that most of us have a hard time obeying because so many variables lead to our hearts being troubled like the future, daily problems, death, etc…Interesting enough, the same troubles that weighed down the disciples. Let’s take a look at how to respond to our troubled hearts and what assurance Jesus gives us when facing troubles.

Week 31 – John’s Gospel Discussion Questions

Read John 13:31-38

1) Look at verse 33. What do you think his disciples would have been thinking about what he said? What insight into Jesus’ love for them can we glean from him calling them “his children?”

2) In verse 33 Jesus says, “Where I am going you cannot come.” Where is he going and why can’t they come. How is it that they will be able to get there (v36)?

3) Read verses 34 and 35 again. How does loving one another identify us as followers of Jesus?

4) In verse 37 and 38 Peter is confronted with some pretty tough stuff. He was going to deny Jesus. Do you think he thought, “no way,” or that he thought there might be a chance? How can we prepare for situations that will require us to have to stand-up for Christ?
